AUATC Meeting Minutes-Mon 5 December 2022 (Zoom)

Introductions: Associate Professor Alessandra Capezio from Australian National University (ANU) was welcomed.

System elements/ key agencies
The outline of system elements/key agencies was presented. Members agreed with the format and items included in the schematic. The Consortium discussed developing a table to list the boards, agencies & associations with whom the group wishes to interact, with a goal of populating this in early 2023.

Funding bodies meetings
The Consortium identified aspects to be discussed at the upcoming meetings:
-Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment (MBIE) and Tertiary Education Commission (TEC; responsible for Performance-Based Research Fund)
-Health Research Council(HRC)and Royal Society/ Te Apārangi.
Three Consortium members were confirmed for each meeting, including the Chair, and an agenda outlined. The significance of air travel as part of the academic promotion process was raised, along with the need to focus on cultural change around academic air travel, rather than imposing procedural changes. Specific travel guidelines Travel policy guidelines from two member institutions are in development and updates will be provided to the Consortium at the next meeting.
A discussion followed about which institutions had completed internal staff surveys and whether this data is available. Some members agreed to share methodology and data as required throughout this process.

2023 Symposium
The 2023 Symposium outline was presented. All member institutions were invitedto be involved, by co-leading sessions. The last week of August and first week of September was agreed as an initial timeframe. Members of the Symposium committee will be confirmed at the February 2023 meeting. The Consortium discussed making the Symposium sessions available for people to watch afterwards, as well as how best to capture feedback both during the sessions and post-event.

2023 Meeting Dates

It was agreed that 2023 meetings will be held on the first Wednesday of every second month, 1-2pm NDZT, starting in February.

AOB
The 4th Aotearoa SDG summit (in-person/online) 9-10 February 2023 was announced.
A member university has been awarded funding to develop a survey around air travel and academic career development. Two consortium members are part of the research team.
The Consortium discussed how large-scale change plans to reduce business travel and air travel innovation e.g., SAFs, fit into the AUATC work.
